Goodbye, Summer...Almost?

Ah, September. School is back in session, the trees are starting to get the tiniest bit of golden in their leaves, all the stores have fall decor out, and...it’s 90 degrees. September in St. Louis is a tricky time because most people are ready for autumn once Labor Day passes, but there are technically still a few weeks of summer.
So here we are, stuck in this tricky seasonal limbo where it’s not quite summer anymore, but fall hasn’t fully arrived either. If you’re feeling a little lost as to what to do these days, 1). You’re not alone and 2). I have a couple of ideas!

If you have kids, hit up some splash pads on those hot last days of summer. While most pools close around Labor Day, many splash pads stay on a bit longer. The Muckerman Children’s Fountain in Tower Grove Park, for instance, remains on through October!
Apple picking is a classic fall activity. While many people think of it as the time to don flannel shirts and cozy up with hot apple cider, the reality is that apple picking begins in early September and it’s usually still rather warm. So prepare for possible heat, but heading out to go apple picking is one of those perfect activities to transition between the seasons. Our favorite spot is Braeutigam Orchards. It’s a small, family-owned orchard that has great apple picking plus animals, a fun kids play area, and delicious treats. I love the apple cider donuts and an apple cider slushie is the perfect treat after picking on a hot day!
Another idea for entertainment this time of year is to enjoy the late summer events around the city. The popular Japanese Festival is happening this weekend at the Missouri Botanical Garden or you could check out the last few Food Truck Fridays of the year. The Muny is closing out their season with Chicago, running until September 5 or you could catch one of the last games of the regular season for the Cardinals. And don’t forget about the Great Forest Park Balloon Race in mid-September! This time of year, while it is transitional, offers loads of fun St. Louis events and activities. If we’re lucky, we might even get some cooler temperatures!
